SEO in the AI Era: Search and Answer Visibility

An approach that considers search performance, visibility in AI answers and brand mentions together.

SEO in the AI Era: Search and Answer Visibility

SEO in the AI era, or AI SEO, means optimizing digital assets not only for conventional search engine bots but also for large language models (LLMs) and generative engines. This emerging discipline aims to position websites as a source of truth in environments such as Google AI Overviews and maximize their share of answer.

Digital marketing is experiencing its most significant structural shift since Google was founded. As traditional blue links give way to direct answers, the zero-click environment is expanding. To adapt, businesses need to shift from pursuing traffic alone toward building authority.

A New Paradigm: From Search Engines to Answer Engines

Traditional SEO seeks to attract people to a website and keep them there. User behavior and search technology, however, have changed fundamentally. According to widely discussed research published by Rand Fishkin of SparkToro, close to 60% of Google searches now end without a click to any website: a zero-click search.

This does not mean SEO is dead. It suggests a move toward engineering answers. People increasingly use Google as an adviser that provides answers rather than as a library catalog that lists links.

As a result, brands should aim beyond appearing on the first page. The objective is to have their brand name, product or data included in the synthesized answers offered by systems such as SearchGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. We call this algorithmic brand awareness.

A Critical Metric: What Is Share of Answer?

Marketing has long tracked market share and share of voice. The AI era adds another important KPI: share of answer (SoA).

Share of answer measures how often an AI model mentions your brand when answering questions on a particular topic, how much detail it includes and the sentiment of those mentions.

Ranking Versus Share of Answer

The following table outlines the distinction between traditional SEO and AI SEO:

Traditional SEO and AI SEO Compared
Characteristic Traditional SEO: Rankings AI SEO: Share of Answer
Success measureClick-through rate and rankingCitation frequency and use as a source
AudienceHuman usersLarge language models and people
Content strategyKeyword densityEntity authority
Data structureText-focusedStructured data: schema and vectors

AI models need authoritative sources to avoid hallucinations, or fabricated information. If your brand establishes that trust, the model can treat it as a canonical source.

GEO Strategies: How Do You Become a Source?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) involves presenting content in a form that machines can understand, trust and reproduce. Three core strategies support this process.

1. Create Information Gain

A patent published by Google discusses an information gain score. The patent alone does not prove that this concept is used in live search systems. It addresses the new information a piece of content provides beyond material previously seen; this article offers no evidence of its use in current search results.

Websites that merely repeat existing information through copying or rewriting do not offer AI summaries an additional contribution. AI has little need for redundancy.

  • Produce original data: Run industry surveys and publish the findings.
  • Include expert perspectives: Go beyond definitions and add insights from in-house specialists.
  • Challenge assumptions: Use evidence to expose weaknesses in a commonly accepted view.

2. Move Toward Entity-Based SEO

Search engines understand not just strings of words but things and concepts: entities. Google's Knowledge Graph maps the world through entities and the relationships between them.

For example, when the word "Apple" appears, an algorithm can distinguish the fruit from the technology company by considering related entities such as iPhone, Tim Cook and iOS.

Practical tip: Include related entities that support your main topic and establish the brand's topical authority.

3. Use Structured Data and Semantic Markup

Appropriate structured data can help search systems understand a content type and its properties. It does not offer a universal speed or visibility multiplier. The code should clearly communicate whether something is an article, an author or another type of entity.

  • Schema markup: Implement Article, FAQPage and Organization schemas completely.
  • HTML5 hierarchy: Arrange H1, H2 and H3 headings in a logical order.
  • Lists and tables: AI models can interpret bulleted lists as readily available information and draw them into summaries.

E-E-A-T and YMYL: Crossing the Trust Threshold

Google uses AI summaries more conservatively for finance, health, law and safety topics, which it calls Your Money or Your Life (YMYL). Where misinformation could cause harm, AI may be withheld or rely only on highly authoritative websites.

Note: Include a detailed author box beneath your content and link to the author's LinkedIn profile. Anonymous signatures such as "Admin" or "Editor" weaken signals of accountability in the AI era.

This is where E-E-A-T—experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness—comes in. Has the author personally experienced the subject? Are they a recognized source in the industry? These questions should be answered convincingly.

A New Set of KPIs: How Do We Measure Success?

Move beyond traffic alone toward measures of impact. Track AI SEO performance with these indicators:

  • Branded search volume: Are people searching directly for your brand?
  • AI visibility: Does your brand appear when you ask ChatGPT or Gemini a question about your industry?
  • Conversion rate: Even if traffic decreases, are the visitors who arrive more likely to buy?

Conclusion: Preparing for the Future of Search

SEO has not ended; it has developed from link engineering toward information architecture. The goal is to provide Google's AI with accurate, high-quality information. Own your data, work with authoritative experts and present content in a form machines can understand.
